Reliquaries for the Fungible, my project commissioned by Marginal, in the framework of the wonderful Tech Rider’s Dilemma project, will be on display at Rezidenta9, one of my favourite exhibition venues in Bucharest, RO!

Tech Rider’s Dilemma tackles problems related to new media survival, heritage with a focus on art & science / technology and various forms of technical dysfunctions in electronic artworks, caused by the dynamics of obsolescence, practices based on improvisation and a penury of inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborations in Romania.

The project opens an active dialogue aimed at understanding the vulnerabilities of art, not just in the face of time, but also related to technological changes and ideological evolution, as well as public interactions, taking the first steps towards creating protocols for new media archiving and preservation in Romania. will includes a research phase (involving both artistic, as well scientific experts), disseminated through a series of articles, opinion pieces and conversations, while also rooting two comissioned new artistic works produced in a transdisciplinary team, led by myself and Mara Oglakci, alongside scientific researchers from the Institute of Lasers, Plasma and Radiation – with the objective of bridging scientific research protocols with the artistic production process.

‘’
That moment when the interactive artwork has been interacted with one too many times and it stopped working.
That moment when the coolest gallery wants to show a work from 5 years ago, but it was taken apart and transformed into 5 new artworks.
That moment when an electronic component breaks down and needs replacement, but they haven’t been producing them for over 3 years.
That moment when the work is returned by the shipping company and you have two missing pieces and 3 extra ones, because it wasn’t handled properly and now it’s broken.

Welcome to the Tech Rider’s Dilemma – an unpleasant, but necessary, conversation about new media obsolescence, conservation and responsibility.
