Back home after an amazing trip to Timișoara!
My recent mobility, supported by the Timișoara Center for Projects, was a whirlwind of art, connections, and exciting possibilities!
My main goal was to dive deep into Timișoara’s vibrant cultural scene, forging strategic partnerships for Marginal and myself, developing projects at the intersection of art, science, and technology, and scouting out fantastic alternative spaces. All timed perfectly with the Art Encounters Biennale opening, of course!
We hit the road from Bucharest on May 29th and returned on June 2nd, 2025. A big shout-out to Andrei Tudose for sharing the ride; it saved a good chunk of travel expenses, and that’s always a win!
From the moment we arrived, it was full steam ahead! I jumped into informal meetings with active Timișoara artists and other cultural workers. A super productive work session with Andreea Săsăran focused on the Simultan Festival (anniversary edition, 20 years!!), Otherwise Residency and Los Association’s upcoming Heritage First! residency, where I’m invited as an artist-in-residence in July-August 2025! We talked about artistic research, collaboration, and exhibition planning – exciting stuff!
I immersed myself in the Art Encounters exhibitions, but didn’t step aside from revisiting Palatul Stefania for a captivating exhibition of photographer Charles Weber. The artistic marathon continued with catching the “Sauver la Princesse” performance at Auăleu, leading to some lovely conversations with so many new people (I hope to collaborate with at least 2 of them in the future, brace yourselves!).
There was no way I would be in Timisoara and not go to Indecis, one of those places that never stops being inspiring! This time, there was a unique cactus and bonsai event, in parales with a lovely group exhibition. I continued exploring Art Encounters, attending guided tours and visiting exhibitions like “The Heart: Medicamente și sentimente,” which was certainly not what I expected! Prospecting the new Paltim space and its exhibitions was also a highlight. Evenings were filled with great discussions with the Simultan & Indecis teams, as well as Habitat B1.
I also got wind of this year’s Simultan Festival theme, “Re-mediate”. It’s amazing how things synchronize sometimes – the project I am currently developing, in the Otherwise Residency at the Biology Institute Bucharest, is rooted specifically on remediation theory!
I went on to exploring more spaces in the city, some that I knew, some that i didn’t, at Faber and Azur, followed by a visited at the National Art Museum where I got to visit the Sigma exhibition, I’m so happy I didn’t miss this!
This trip has been nothing short of amazing, and I’m already dreaming of the next one! Not to spoil anything, but really looking forward to August.
